This ham radio is nothing more than a paperweight because it needs an extra cable in order to be programmed by a pc using chirp, I spent days changing settings and then scanning the channels and it picked up absolutely nothing, I even found the repeater frequency to extend range but nothing and if it did find something it was purely static.I have also purchased the 18″ antenna and programming cable and it still doesn’t pick up anything… I’ve uploaded all the frequencies in the uk including the repeaters and I put it on scan to scan the programmed in channels constantly for any sign of life and it picked up absolutely nothing! I had it scanning all day and even had to charge it as it was scanning for 10 hours so if it cant pick up any talking over a space of 10 constant hours somethings not right.

low cost radio with no actual functions other than simple channel programming interface and manual frequency input. Fine for walkie Talkie on the VHF / UHF frequencies. Programming software is very, very basic.

Recommended, good value for money, they are better made than the price would suggest. These transceivers are sold under different brand and model names, and are how most people get into amateur radio. The limitation of these transceivers is that they can only use Frequency Modulation (FM) mode, a lot of the transmissions on these frequencies are in other systems.Among others, I have heard Gatwick Airport takeoff control on this transceiver.I have increased the range of my transceiver using either a 771 antenna or a 14.6 inch ‘Tactical’ antenna. It is legal to listen to public broadcasts and amateur band transmissions. Acting on what you hear on other frequencies, can become a crime if what is transmitted is meant to be private. You can transmit on amateur radio frequencies in an emergency situation such as a mountain rescue, otherwise you need an amateur radio licence.Although these transceivers will allow you to transmit on the UK unlicensed Personal Mobile Radio frequencies (PMR446), the regulations say a max power of 0.5 Watt ERP, and these transmit more power. These frequencies also have a requirement of a non-detachable Arial (Antenna). Similar rules apply in the USA to the FRS frequencies.

These are not “walkie talkies”. The frequencies these are generally programmed to use require a license e.g.144-148MHz is allocated to the Amateur Radio band. The only “licence-free” radios operate on different, specific frequencies, such as PMR446 in Europe (around 446 MHz) or FRS in the USA/Canada (around 462 and 467 MHz). These operate at very low power (0.5W) and require the antenna to be integral. For this reason, these radios also do meet the license terms to be used on the PMR446 frequencies.Just worth keeping in mind before you go ahead and buy these, hoping to use them like walkie-talkies.
