  1. Consumer Compass

This DJI Osmo Action 6 feels like the boffins in Shenzhen finally admitted that most of their ‘action’ cameras just sit on a tripod or are used for vlogging, and they leaned right into it. The sensor on this thing is a 1/1.1 inch square monster. It’s a huge step from the older 1/1.3 inch sensor in the Action 5, a size change that you can truly see when the sun dips. That SuperNight mode, rated down to ISO 51200, it’s not just a setting, it’s a whole different camera. I mean, my old action camera footage at dusk looked like it was filmed without even moonlight above, but the OA6 actually pulls out clean shadows and proper detail. It’s worth remembering that a 1/1.1 inch sensor is nearly a 70 per cent increase in surface area compared to the 1/2.3 inch chips that used to be the industry standard not so long ago. That’s not a minor tweak, that’s a “re-engineering”.Workflow Superpowers: The Square Sensor & Aspect RatiosThe fundamental brilliance of the Action 6 lies in that square sensor, obvs. It’s a genuine workflow superpower for the modern creator. It allows filming just a single time using a Custom 4K aspect ratio and then, in the Mimo app, extract a perfect 16:9 widescreen video for YouTube, or a crisp 9:16 vertical video for TikTok or Instagram Stories, all from the same clip. This completely negates the need to physically rotate the camera in a frame, which is a massive, massive time-saver in post-production!Aperture Control and Shooting ModesThe variable aperture, f/2.0 to f/4.0, is a fantastic, if slightly timid, idea. Tying the wide f/2.0 aperture mostly to the specific SuperNight mode feels like a bit of a cop-out, though it does serve a brilliant purpose when paired with the horrendously expensive, optional macro lens, allowing for that desired shallow depth of field. However, the ability to stop down to f/4.0 is brilliant for getting a cinematic starburst effect from bright points of light, like the sun, when shooting manually. When comes to the camera’s mode selection, well that’s pretty extensive, allowing you to fine-tune your capture for almost any scenario:Slow Motion: Capture serious action with up to 4K at 120 frames per second or 1080P at 240 frames per second.Specialised Recording: Modes like Pre-Recording (saves a loop before you hit record, so you never miss the action) and Loop Recording (for dashcam use) are hugely practical additions.Pro Quality: You can push the image to its limit by setting the Bit Rate to High for maximum detail and using the D-Log M colour profile, giving you the flat, high-control footage you need for proper colour grading.Body, Control, and ConnectivityThe physical body design is very action cam-y – strong, sturdy, and robust – and weighing in at 149 g, which is fine even for helmet mounting. The QR magnetic mounting system has been upgraded, and remains a true bit of what must perfect perfect design and I’ve yet to meet anyone that doesn’t absolutely love it! For sheer convenience and the ability to switch mounting orientation instantly, it’s simply the best there is, IMVHO. The waterproofing to 20 metres straight out of the box is a good 2 metres better than many rivals, as far as I can tell.Crucially, the control is now far more flexible than it used to be. Now there’s gesture control and voice control so the camera can be operated hands-free, which is a genuine convenience when the camera is mounted out of reach, or when close by but out of view such as when it is strapped to a helmet.Audio and Smartwatch DataThe audio capabilities are significantly upgraded as well. The OA6 now has three microphones and includes a “Wind Noise Reduction” setting. For even more serious audio capture, the OA6 can connect one or two separate DJI wireless microphones directly, enabling multi-track audio recording for interviews or dual-vlogging.Regarding data, the camera can natively record and display Depth and Altitude gauges for water and mountain activities. While the Garmin and Apple Watch data overlay (speed, heart rate, cadence) is not an on-screen feature during capture, it is nonetheless a brilliant, powerful post-production tool achieved exclusively inside the DJI Mimo app. This allows the camera to remain uncluttered during the shoot while still offering that fantastic digital (and some may, suffering) overlay afterwards. The 50Gb of built-in storage is a decent, tangible safety net for recording, especially when a one terabyte memory card will set you back about £115 for a fast one. Maximum battery life of four hours is also a solid benchmark, a clear half hour to 40 mins longer than some of its main competition, and the fact it’s cold-resistant is a proper benefit for anyone mad enough to film in a British winter.A Spanner in the Works: The Storage InterruptionIt is not all sweetness and light with the OA6 though, and there are some glitches lurking in the firmware that, whilst I expect a swift correction, are currently quite vexing. One issue, in particular, is a right bloomin’ nuisance: while recording directly to the SD card, the camera inexplicably ceases recording once the file size nudges 16Gb. Initially, I suspected a careless thumb had brushed the shutter button, as the unit simply stopped without automatically creating a new segment and continuing the capture. I have since tried the long-form recording test twice more, and the failing remains persistently present. As for the £319 price for the essential edition, it’s clearly competitive when compared to the top-end flagship camera currently available. But given the massive sensor, the flexible square recording format, the advanced audio capability, and the clever data tricks it performs, it feels to me that it really does deliver the best value in the action cam game right now. The only thing that truly sticks in the throat is that optional macro lens, priced at a truly extortionate £150 – almost half the price of the AO6 itself. A bit cheeky that.

I paid for this with my own money, although my wife is a Vine customer this never did show on the account, so this is an honest and unbiased review. Many are wondering if this is a good upgrade from the Action 5 Pro or even the 4. This is all down to preference. The variable f2-f4 aperture is only available in Auto mode, in Pro Mode (Manual settings) you get options to select f2.6 fixed, f2.8 fixed or f4 starburst. I will not be using the 2x zoom, the quality seems very soft, like when you zoom in on a camera phone, the quality starts to look mushy. I also won’t be using the custom orientation i.e. using the full 1.1 inch sensor to have the options to crop landscape or portrait after the fact. But I do like the option of now selecting to use landscape or portrait mode before shooting, so I have saved those as profiles in the QS setting. The quality overall is on par with the Action 5 Pro, I wouldn’t say it’s any better but I think for me, the f4 is a game changer, this will solve the problem if you shoot with the 180 degree rule to get a more natural blur for a cinematic look i.e. (double your frame rate with exposure) when trying to achieve motion blur, because the only way of getting this is to use ND filters, then if you use ND filters you introduce jitters in the footage as your action camera is trying to stabilise the motion blur which you are trying to achieve. If shooting in bright daylight you still may struggle at f4 but this will help a lot in my opinion. I am also really happy that Horizon Balancing is now in 4k 60fps dewarp. If you like shooting in full auto, there is now the feature of selecting a colour grade straight out of camera, so it has a nice look ready to upload to social media. The stabilisation is so good, gimbal like quality. For me, going from the Osmo Action 5 Pro to the Action 6 was worth it. Even though DJI decided due to the in built options to shoot landscape or portrait mode, they should have still included a cage, I also agree with someone else to also include a lens cap.Especially when they include non essential items like a sticky wall mount. If you are looking for a small/compact camera that offers the best image quality with auto and full customisation, then the Osmo Action 6 is the best option right now.

Very good camera. Highly recommended. He records beautifully at night and during the day. Nothing shakes the perfect picture really is worth the price.

Great quality product, very robust as made from cutting edge materials, its looks fantastic and the experience would of been better but I was plagued with software issues at my end, which prevented me from using this camera, DJI and thinkassemble.co.uk where fantastic throughout and I was fully refunded, please don’t let this put you off buying this great bit of kit, the software issues where at mine end of things not DJIs

A fantastic upgrade if you’re switching from an Osmo action 3 like I did. The variable aperture, the square sensor, the cinematic modes built in, the super night mode, and other new features are fantastic. The good part is that if you bought the adventure combo before, then you just need to buy the essential combo and an extra battery. The battery charging case, accessories, and selfie stick from the adventure combo that came with the Osmo action 3 work great. I’m guessing you can use the older battery too but it just won’t last as long. The bad part is that your Osmo action 3 lens filters and a third party cage won’t fit as the Osmo action 6 is larger in size. It’s not heavy at all. Honestly I’m glad I waited for 3 years before upgrading it. It’s very intuitive to use, and is great value for money, I don’t think you need to buy the DJI refresh extended warranty for this unless you’re very careless with it.

Be mindful of youtubers trends and communication strategies. The product is legit and delivers if you’re the target. I upgraded from the OA3, so it made sense for me and I’m perfectly happy with it.

Consigliato

Best Versatile Action Cam, for action shots or vlogs
Edit: Newest Update allows for 8K video at 30fps…big upgrade! This is my first action camera, and I picked up the DJI Action 6 for an upcoming trip. I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. The camera is incredibly compact, making it easy to carry and mount anywhere, and the video quality is outstanding. The low-light performance is surprisingly good for an action cam, and the RockSteady stabilization is amazing—it makes handheld and action shots look smooth and professional with very little effort. For a beginner, it’s extremely easy to use right out of the box.I did notice that the Enhance Bundle isn’t quite the same as the Adventure Bundle from past launches (it appears to be short one battery), but considering the overall price at the time of purchase, it’s still a great deal for DJI’s latest action camera. You still get 2 magnetic mount clips and the extension rod.Perfect vlog style camera so far, with the battery, extension rod and the durability of the camera, theres nothing to fiddle around with and to distract you when you are out and about. Quick and easy video camera for anyone. Also has D-LogM, which allows you to color grade, but for most, just use the DJI Lut or just film regular 10-BIt and slap a preset film tone and you are done! This cant be any easier. Here’s the screenshot of a video I took of my dog using just DJI Lut to color grade. I’m really impressed!

Excelente producto.
