First off, I bought these in the Think Assemble Prime Day sales for £70 which is a total bargain.I would not consider myself an audiophile and if you are then you will probably want to invest more money into your headphones but the quality on these should suit most people. Very clear sound and I’ve picked up sound that I’ve never heard before on tracks I listen to often.I found these when looking for open backed headphones, partly because I want to be aware of my surroundings when I’m wearing them and partly so they don’t make my ears feel as hot as my older headphones. Another benefit was that they feel more like listening to speakers rather than just being blasted into my ears but that could be personal preference. The open backed nature does mean there is sound leakage, both for you hearing external sound but also others being able to hear your music, so that’s something you will need to consider for your usage.Very comfortable to wear for longer periods of time partially due to being lightweight though maybe not as portable as folding headphones would be but I don’t need that.Very easy to use, no controls on the headphones so controlled completely through whatever you plug them into. In the box you get a 1.2m cable with a 3.5mm jack plug and a 3m cable with a 6.3mm jack plug, however there is also a 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter included so you can still use the longer cable with devices that have a 3.5mm socket. The adapter makes the plug quite long so maybe not a great solution if you intend to use it with a portable device like a phone. The leads have a twist and lock mechanism to secure them into the headphones which is fantastic but you will need to be aware of that if you intend to swap over to the 3m cable.Overall, with the considerations I’ve given above, I would fully recommend these headphones for people wanting wired open back headphones without paying hundreds of pounds. Especially great value if you can pick them up on sale.

I bought these Sennheiser HD 599 “ears” on a Black Friday deal for £99. The reason I bought them is, I damaged (but still working) wires on my +/- 15 year old Bose in ear headphones (wired with no noise cancelling), with the Bose replacement costing also around this mark. I thought I would give these over ear phones a go based on reviews, and to get even better sound. My review is a comparison to the Bose in ear phones. The type of music I listen to range from classical, pop, rock, heavy metal, country and well, any music I like. Mostly older songs, I am not into the modern manufactured repetitive boom-boom stuff although I do have very good rap and rave (type repetitive) songs. I use “ears” only for listening via an iPod and laptop, as my sound system has excellent Monitor Audio speakers.Quality and comfort. The Sennheiser HD 599s feel plasticky but do not let the put you off, I think it helps towards keeping the weight down. They are comfortable to wear for long listening sessions, a lot more comfortable than much cheaper ears I had in my younger days. The Bose (though very small) feels solid and as for wearing comfort, I do not know I have them on, that is how good they are.Sound. These two ears are different, it depends on what you like. When I first listened to the Sennheisers, I was disappointed, I expected more but now I’m (nearly) onboard. After about an hour, I swapped between the Bose and these, and realised why. They give a different experience. The Sennheisers give a smooth deep richer (not excessive) base sound, while still hearing everything. One way to put it is, the music is smeared all over your brain in smooth chocolate. Whereas the Bose, when I first put them on, they blew my mind, a WOW I did not expect that moment. They do not give as “rich” (base-y) sound as the Sennheisers but do not get me wrong, they give amazing base. It is just that they are not as smooth or deep as the Sennheisers. You do however hear where every instrument is placed and every note played, in detail. No smeared in relaxing dark chocolate here, the light is shone on every note.Which would I buy again. Tricky, it depends. Please do not get me wrong, these Sennheisers are very good and super comfortable and I am keeping them but, if the Bose and these are at the same price, for my taste and comfort, I will get the Bose. If the Sennheisers are full price at £170, it is Bose for me no question. It would have been interesting to compare a Bose over ear to the Sennheisers but that is for someone else.
