Bought this after xmas to check it out as i already have a google subscription that covers ai, 5tb storage and home premium covers free.Pros:* Pairing this was easy peasy* Comes with all fixings and mounts* Recyclable cardboard packagingCons:* Power cable is non-standard and requires a separate specific extension cable, which does not exist!!! Going the apple route with proprietary connections. (Photo attached)* Familiar face detection only stores up to 3 faces so far…. Not sure what the deal with this is, but still can’t add more than 3 faces to the camera library. Detects other people though.Update, after a while it’s managed to detect more faces and am able to add them.Overall, given that I can’t place the camera where i need to as the power cable length is too short, and the face detection needs work, score is lowered.

I’ve tried many different brands of cameras and most are more than adequate and this Google Nest camera is up there with some of the better ones I’ve tried. The physical appearance and quality of build is excellent and can’t be faulted and it has quite a nice weight to it. It’s easy to install and set up and only presents any difficulty if it’s an issue getting the cable to where you want to locate it as it’s only mains operated.Setting it up for basic operations is simple and the images it gives are really quite good and it’s easy to recognise people as they approach the camera. Two way audio is quite clear and alerting can be set up which is quite good however I didn’t find it to be as instantaneous as I would have liked. If you already have some Nest products which I have then it’s quite easy to integrate. The downside of using this camera is that there are many additional features that are only unlocked if you subscribe to Nest aware which you’ll need for things like face recognition, and you can only use this camera through the app rather than using your desktop as you can with Ring cameras.Whilst this is a very good camera, I’d only recommend investing in it if you either already have a Nest setup or are intending investing in one as you need to add a subscription to use this to the best of it’s abilities and if you just want the basic features then there are other cheaper alternatives which are just as good in my opinion. If however you are looking to specifically get Nest cameras then this 2nd Gen is a good improvement over the 1st Gen and therefore recommended.

Stopped working after 2 weeks. Purchased brand new and installed as per instructions. Out of the blue, the camera stopped working and completely died. Would not even reset to factory settings, the unit just failed. Returned to Think Assemble, who thankfully have an excellent and easy returns process. Should be zero stars.

I’m definitely in two minds about this camera.The good:* it was easy to set up. Power it up, fire up the Google home app, and the set-up is really easy.* the image quality is great. It’s fairly good at detecting motion and alerting you, if thats’what you want (the alerts are nowhere near instant, though, if you’re looking to respond to someone approaching in real time).The rest:* even though the Google home app knows my face, the camera only recognises me about 1 time in 10. What it would do with less familiar faces, I’m not sure. But I wouldn’t want to rely on it.* though the camera itself is reasonable value for money at £119.99 (for a good quality, outdoor-proof, slick set-up), you need a Google paid subscription to get the most out of it. That’s quite a big ask.* in terms of fixtures and cables, it’s not compatable with the 1st Gen outdoor camera, so it’s not an easy upgrade if you’ve already got one. (the fixture is different, and the cable attachment is different, so you’ll be removing the old one to wire in this one).* there is an option to flip the image 180 degrees, so you can mount it upside down, but no option for a 90 degree turn, so you’ve GOT to use it in landscape mode, even if your situation calls for something else (like an alleyway, say, or trying to cover your own path and not encroach on your neighbour’s privacy). Of course, you *can* mount it sideways, but then the face recognition functionality isn’t there (and you’re going to be craning your neck/turning your phone to look at the pictures).Overall, it seems to have many of the same shortcomings of the 1st Gen, in a differnent form-factor. I’m disappointed.
