This is the 2nd UV-5R I’ve bought, this time for my brother. We use it whilst driving which is a complete different experience, the range goes for about 4-5 miles on the motorway and about 2-3 miles in the city. The dual band is very useful when we are in convoy with others and the battery lasts up to 2 days of constant use. Sound quality is pretty good and it’s really easy to use. Would recommend buying an external wired speaker mic for when driving. Would definitely recommend!

  2. Andy Southan

A great first radio, for those wanting to become amateur radio operators.

I have been a amateur radio enthusiast for a couple of decades. I really only now use the 2m and 70cm if I am out and about. Hence why I picked these little radios. This one is my 2nd one, that is a Baofeng, my other being the UV-6R. Why did I get this one? Simple for the 8W, or alledgedly 8W.I also run a Yaesu 70D but I find the battery life on that is very very low. So, I got this one, it is smaller than the UV-6R which is nice. Programming the channels, bothe Repeater and simplex is easy, however, by using the Chirp program, this makes it even easier, although, in this pack I got, I did not get the programming cable,. so had to buy one on thinkassemble.co.uk, they are around £9.99.The sound from this unit is a little on the tinny side and not as loud as the UV-6R which is a shame, but hey we cannot have everything in a lesser modelObviously, with this radio, you do not get WIRES nor the digital it is purely an analogue UHF VHF transmitterRemember people, to operate the transmitting potential of this radio, you MUST hold a Amateur Radio Licence..Would I recommend this radio? If you just got your licence and are not sure about if you are going to enjoy it, then I would say as a first radio, get this. Or even as a cheap portable radio to walk around with, yes.

Great little budget radio for amateur radio operators. Always good to have around or to throw in the car before you travel.

it works fine but irritated that it was advertised as 8w when its 4w.

Only thing that lets this down is the lack of direct USB charging. You need the base station so charging on the move is difficult.
