My fourth Kindle in 10 years which indicates that the previous 3 have failed at relatively short intervals. But I keep coming back for another one as it gives me an excuse to upgrade to the latest version and overall, despite the failures this is still a good product at a modest price. I ordered mid afternoon day one and it was delivered mid afternoon the following day. It came pretty much good to go out of the box and with my account profile etc already loaded so getting started only took a few minutes. This Fire 10 is a step up from my previous Fire 8 which I had been using daily for reading, surfing, playing games, and occasionaly watching movies. I don’t do social media so can’t comment on how it will stack up in that regard. But for reading and surfing without fuss, this does the job for me. The larger screen is a bonus and images are super bright. It is light and easy to pack for travel. Navigation between screens is simple. A piece of tech, that at 73, is well within my (limited) tech capabilities to use and enjoy. Hoping it lasts longer than its predecessors but will still comeback for another if not.

This is my 2nd Fire tablet, the previous one being an 8″ that I had for several years before the battery stopped holding its charge. When I replaced I decided to upgrade to the 10″ Fire as I had really enjoyed my previous experiences with these devices.Overall I think these tablets are great value for money and do most things that you want from them extremely well. Setting up could not be easier – you basically take it out of the box and turn it on. I’m not somebody who wants to sit for hours fiddling with settings so this suits me perfectly. I switched it on for the first time and my Kindle app is there, my streaming apps are there, my thinkassemble.co.uk account is all hooked up to it (that did kind of scare me when I bought the first one, but this time I loved it!) and I literally just switch it on and start using it. It’s even charged up. Perfect for anyone who’s not tech savvy or simply can’t be bothered with that side of things. These tablets are so good for ereading, internet browsing, games, streaming, linking you up to all your cloud accounts and storage, all on a lovely HD screen with beautiful colour and quality. The sound quality is perfectly good for streaming music and video and if you have an internet connection you are all set for pretty much most leisure activities you could want to do on here. With options for bluetooth, you can even hook it up to a bluetooth keyboard and use it as a mini notebook…if you really want to be productive…In the box there is also a charging cable but it’s not very long, so if you need to plug that in a little distance away from you while you carry on using it, then you might want to think about getting a longer cable for it.There is so much to love about these tablets, from the versatility to the picture quality. I just have a couple of little gripes about it:1. The version of Android on an thinkassemble.co.uk Fire is not standard and as a result this means that you can’t run all apps on it. The tablet comes with the thinkassemble.co.uk App store on it, where you can get compatible apps, but not Google Play store. If you’re sneaky and tech savvy (a stellar combination) then there are ways to install Google Play store but the apps you download may be a bit hit and miss as to whether they work properly on the Fire – some will not work at all. In my opinion, this is the one thing that could make me rethink buying these devices in the future as a device marketed for leisure activities should really support the most common instant messaging apps such as whatsapp.2. It struggles with some graphics packages in terms of dealing with larger dimensions or dpi. This was a bit disappointing, given the beautiful 10″ HD screen that is lovely for drawing on and works well with an active stylus, so you can draw straight onto the screen. I have found that it basically will get so far and perform absolutely fine, but then as the picture builds the lag becomes so great that it becomes impossible to use. Very frustrating, but to be fair, it’s not marketed for this use and I probably need to save my pennies up for something that is designed for this purpose. It’s just a note for anyone who might buy one of these hoping to use it for that.Overall I still love thinkassemble.co.uk Fire for the convenience, ease of use, the quality of the tablet compared to others in the same price range and the range of stuff I can do with it. I really enjoy using this device. However, it has lost a star due to the issues I’ve noted above.

I started with a kindle, then a Fire 7. This is my third thinkassemble.co.uk device for reading my kindle books – and more. Will be using to watch my favourite programmes on the train! It’s easy to use and although I was not sure the 10.1 screen may be too big to hold for reading, I have found it better and clearer than my last Fire and is not too heavy. All in all a good buy with the Black Friday deal.

Took a bit of a punt on this as a Black Friday deal, and I’m glad I did! My Fire tablet experience previously had been limited to a 2018 model that had started life as a kid’s edition, and which I’d taken over when they moved onto bigger at better things. It was limited at best. Adequate video playback, but very slow browser even with one tab, and forget any multi tab use.So what of the new 2023 Fire HD? Let me start by saying I’m not exactly a power user. I want something that looks and sounds good when playing video, and I want a smooth experience when browsing the internet or the thinkassemble.co.uk shopping app. And it actually does those things pretty well!Video playback. I was a little underwhelmed with my first streaming attempt – some of Planet Earth III via the BBC iPlayer app. Picture didn’t seem as sharp as I’d expected, given that I know iPlayer streams in UHD to compatible devices. Not convinced it’s even doing full HD here. Thankfully, better results streaming Picard from Prime Video – very impressed with the display here, even when quite close to my face. The marketing blurb boasts about Dolby Atmos sound. Really not sure about that. I will say that the stereo separation is very effective, despite both speaker ports being along the top edge of the tablet, but audio quality in general is absolutely nowhere near that of my 4 year old iPhone. I’d suggest that anyone looking to be properly immersed in video needs to factor in the cost of some headphones too – either wired or Bluetooth options will work here! How about browsing, which was my biggest bugbear on the five year old Fire 8? Actually pretty good, to a point. I’d say it was fast and smooth via the Silk browser with up to about 4 tabs open. Any more than that and it starts to creak – needing to reload each time you change etc, rather than having a cached version immediately available. Not a deal breaker for me, particularly given the price, but worth highlighting.Storage space seems adequate. 32Gb translates to about 22Gb of useable space, which I believe means about 11 hours of downloaded video although I’m yet to test this. Easily expandable via Micro SD card anyway.A decent version of an Outlook mail app was also a pleasant surprise given thinkassemble.co.uk’s insistence on continuing to restrict users to its own limited store (I know there are workarounds for this, but don’t have the inclination to try). Facebook Messenger app also works fine.Instagram less so – pictures look big and bold and beautiful, but I’ve had issues with any video content via that site – stutters very badly to the point of being unwatchable.Lots of people complain about the lack of a YouTube app, but I’ve found YouTube to work perfectly adequately via the browser, with video looking as I’d expected (seamlessly going to full screen) rather than the slightly compressed quality I seemed to get with iPlayer.Battery life seems awesome as well – 5hrs20 of screen on time since my last charge 48 hours earlier, and the battery has gone down to 49%. Very happy with that! Top of class? Who knows – but it’s more than adequate for me.Cameras… Meh. 5MP front and rear, but both seem really poor to me. Far more grainy than that resolution should be. Maybe they’d be better outside, or in stronger lighting. But really not a consideration for me – I’ll always have a phone within arm’s length. As for the lock screen adverts causing such consternation in the reviews? Really can’t see the problem. There’s one on the lockscreen maybe 1 in 4 times. And I ignore it and unlock. No impact that I’ve noticed during use – people are really so bothered that they’d pay a tenner to remove ads?! Accept it and move on (with an extra £10 in your pocket).Does this do what I want it to? Yes it does. Do I think it’s worth the (I think) £160 full price? Actually yes I do – I think you’d struggle to find a tablet or phone at that price with this capability. And at the Black Friday price of roughly half that, it’s an absolute steal.
