Small enough to disappear into a jacket pocket, serious enough to replace a much bigger kit. The Ricoh GR IV is the ultimate travel camera for people who care about seeing, not fiddling. The 28mm-equivalent lens is sharp edge-to-edge, with a character that feels honest rather than over-processed. Colours are restrained, skin tones natural, blacks rich without crushing — the kind of files that don’t need much work. JPEGs are genuinely beautiful straight out of camera, especially for street, interiors and quiet moments on the move.Where it really shines is speed and discretion. It’s on instantly, focuses fast, and doesn’t announce itself. Perfect for galleries, cities, cafés, airports — all the in-between spaces where big cameras feel intrusive. The ergonomics are minimal but considered; everything you need, nothing you don’t.It’s not about zooms, modes or spectacle. It’s about consistency, restraint, and trust. A camera that rewards taste over tech.If you travel light and care about images that feel observed, not performed, the Ricoh GR IV is close to perfect.

Unfortunately, I needed to return my GR IV and buy a replacement. Out of the box and unused, the top left of the lens barrel was tight and rubbing on the surround, while the bottom right had a wide gap and protruded the frame by 1mm. There was a barrel alignment defect.

I was looking forward to this Ricoh GRIV , having owned GR models from the GRII and GRIII. Unfortunately after just 20 mins of use , the lens stopped retracting and stuck open. Looking at it closely , the whole lens assembly is off-centre and badly fitted. The dial on the top of the camera is also sub-par in quality and feels rough as anything and is difficult to move when needed. It’s all boxed up and awaiting pick up by Think Assemble for a replacement. Ricoh really dropped the ball on this release with their QC.

Mine is amazing. You cant believe you carried around a bigger camera. I stuck on the JJC filter AND use the JJC push on lens cap to stop dust getting on the sensor through the lens mechanism, a problem on previous models.. I also use the JJC thumb grip which is wonderful, all those bit are on amazon. The accessory flash is unfortunately really poor, its too strong at close ranges and too weak at distance, it doesnt connect with the camera exposure sadly. All in all, the best portable camera ive had so far. And Ive owned a lot of cameras.
